Florence Irene Grassman

January 25, 1925 — May 13, 2014

On May 13, 2014, in Angleton, TX, Florence Irene Grassman (89) peacefully passed from her earthly home to her heavenly home. She was born on January 25, 1925, in Wynona, OK, to the late Thomas Alan Hays and the late Delia Kennreck Hays. Florence, and her sister Margaret Hays Currie, raised by their grandparents John Wesley and Eva Alan Hays (Grandma Hays), continued to reside within the Oklahoma Osage Indian reservation area until their high school graduation, at which time they moved to Angleton, TX. Upon settling in Angleton, and experiencing the warm weather, Florence announced that she had found where she belonged and would never again live in cold weather! While living in Angleton, she received nursing training through the St. Joseph hospital system. She also met and married the late John Grady Jackson, Jr, of Angleton, with whom she eloped on October 11, 1946. They had one son and two daughters. As a result of John's service in the Navy and because of the demands of his engineering profession, Florence and John lived in many different locations throughout the United States, before returning "home" to Angleton with their children. On July 5, 1962, John passed away at the age of 36. In 1967, Florence married Joseph M. Grassman of Chenango. They were married 32 years and enjoyed sharing their time between homes in Angleton and on Lake LBJ, until Joseph passed away on March 4, 1999. During that time, Florence completed her Bachelor's Degree in Art History and served as a docent at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Florence enjoyed all things creative! From superb cooking, to quilting, painting, needle pointing, hooking rugs, and making baskets, she found great pleasure in creating lovely things. She was a long time member of Angleton's First United Methodist Church and a part of the United Methodist Women, Rebekah Circle. Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, her husband John G. Jackson Jr, her husband, Joseph M. Grassman, daughters Shelley Irene Jackson and Andrea Jackson Weber. Surviving Florence are her sister, Margaret Hays Currie of Blue Lake, TX; son, John Grady Jackson, III (wife, Audrey), of Houston, TX; three grandsons: Wesley Andrews Jackson (wife, Suzanne), of Houston, TX, Drew Thomas Jackson (wife, Saona) of Richmond, VA, and Bradley Howard Jackson of Austin, TX; one granddaughter: Allison Weber Jeffers (husband, Bruce) of Austin, TX. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Jake Grady Jackson and Luke Andrews Jackson of Houston, TX; Scarlet Wren Jackson and Naomi Lark Jackson of Richmond, VA, and two nephews, Terry O. Currie and Dan F. Currie of Houston, TX. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Virginia Hernandez and DeDe Orta, whose dedicated, loving service and care of our mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt truly blessed her last year on this earth. Funeral services will be held at Angleton's First United Methodist Church, on Sunday, May 18, at 2:30 PM, with burial to follow at Angleton Cemetery.
