Thurman Green

Born in Dallas, March 16, 1922 he died peacefully at home with his family just after midnight on February 4, 2015. The son of Sammie and Margaret Helen Green, he graduated from Angleton High School, Class of 1940. He attended Sam Houston State Teacher's College before enlisting in the Navy. He was a gunner's mate on the USS Saranac in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Thurman worked for Dow Chemical Company, Freeport Division as an instrument technologist for 40 years. He was one of the first workers in the Polyethylene Unit at Plant B. In recognition of his abilities, he was sent to with teams to startup plants in Columbia, Chile and South Korea. A long time avid sports fan, Thurman was also a star athlete at both AHS and Sam Houston. He carried that sports enthusiasm into coaching Youth Baseball and by serving as President of the Angleton Quarterback Club. He followed the Wildcats until he was unable to attend the games and even then still kept track of their success. After becoming an Episcopalian in 1956, he served on the vestry as Senior Warden and on various other committees at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. Thurman was a man of deep faith. He will be remembered for his gentle quiet nature and his deeply caring heart. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Sammie and Margaret Helen Green; his brother, Morgan Durwood Green; and his half-brothers, Oscar and Arthur Green. He is survived by his lovely wife of 68 years, Jimmie Lou; his son Richard and his wife, Kathleen; and son, Aidan; his daughter, Sammy. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Laurene Patterson, Beth Hunter and Margaret Roussel and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Private interment will be held at Angleton Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, at Peach and Chenango in Angleton at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 6, 2015. The Reverend Travis Smith will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church Endowment Fund.
