Allen James Hammons

December 17, 1937 — January 25, 2019

Allen James Hammons, 81, of Angleton, TX, departed from this life on Friday, January 25th, 2019 in Galveston, TX. He was born on December 17th, 1937 in Richmond, TX to Allen John and Anna Leona (Miller) Hammons. Allen married the love of his life, Irene Lillian Harbour, on June 29th, 1957 in Galena Park, Texas. He worked for Texas Highway Department, Angleton, TX; Brown & Root at South Texas Project, Matagorda County, TX and retired from Edison at San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant, San Diego County, CA. He had a great sense of humor; he loved playing and being with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball but he also loved to play tennis, basketball, golf, volleyball, or anything he could turn into a competition. Around 1966, he started a Men's Slow Pitch Softball Association in Angleton, and he also was a coach in Angleton Youth baseball, basketball, and softball for many years. If you ever had a chance to meet him you more than likely would have a fond memory of how he made you laugh or how he was there to lend a helping hand. You could not meet him without being a better person for it afterwards. Whether you met him on one of his outings to Chick-Fil-A, Whataburger, or at the ball field, he left many lasting impressions with everyone, and taught so many lessons every chance he got. He loved with all he had, and there was nothing he loved more than his family. His family meant the world to him, and to his family he was the world. His parents; his sister, Grace Ellen Thrasher; his brothers, Freddy Ray and Gene Michael Hammons, preceded him in death. Allen is survived by his wife Irene; sons, Allen James Hammons, Jr., wife Kim, of Brownfield, TX; Timothy Joseph Hammons of Angleton, TX; daughters, Regina Irene Bieri, husband Stewart; Donna Marie Reed, husband Eric, both of Angleton, TX; grandchildren, James Richard Hammons, wife Melinda of Brownfield, TX, LaRhonda Jordan Hammons, husband Edward Allen, of Lubbock, TX; Charlotte Gayle Johnson, husband Travis; Chase Edwin Bieri, fiance Lacie Linscombe, of Angleton, TX; great-grandchildren, Sara Charlotte, Ella Mae, Logan Stewart and Whitney Lee Johnson; Cameron James and Cailey Lynn Bieri all of Angleton, TX; Jennifer Michelle and Christopher Allen Hammons of Lubbock, TX; James Ryan and Kyle Lincoln Hammons of Brownfield, TX; brother Jack Hammons, wife Jeanne of Boling, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will dearly miss him.
