Caleb Lee Sawyer

August 25, 1987 — March 13, 2021

Caleb Lee Sawyer, 33, of Victoria, Texas passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2021. Caleb was born in Angleton, Texas on August 25, 1987 to his proud and loving parents Willie and Laura Sawyer and big brother Matt. He attended Angleton schools and graduated from Angleton High School in 2006. He continued his education at Texas A&M Corpus Christi where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Technical Writing and a Master of Arts degree in English. He was a member of Sigma Tau Delta and received numerous awards for his service. His many projects included writing community grants for The Corpus Christi Food Bank and YWCA of Corpus Christi. Upon graduation, Caleb joined the staff at College of the Mainland in Texas City, Texas where he spent three years teaching, facilitating, and coordinating programs such as Upward Bound. From there, he joined the University of Maryland Global Campus in Pyeongtaek, South Korea as an adjunct writing instructor for the next two years. At the time of his death, Caleb was the Academic Advisor of Veterans Services at Victoria College and an adjunct professor at University of Maryland. Caleb was a wonderful loving son, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, and deeply loyal friend. His captivating smile and infectious laughter were magnetic, Caleb had that special gift of making anyone he spent time with feel special and worthy. Whether you were eight years old or eighty-eight years old, he would engage you in meaningful conversations and have you laughing. He was a sports fanatic, avid reader, gifted freelance writer and loved a good debate. His travels took him to Germany, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Australia. He loved hiking, taking pictures, and experiencing other cultures. It was in his nature to encourage people, to bring out the best in everyone and to always do whatever he could do to help others. At a very young age, Caleb gravitated to his grandmother "Ma", and spent countless hours snuggled together talking about things that bothered him or he didn't understand, reading, doing crossword puzzles togethers and sharing life. The seed was sown, and a gifted, compassionate, and empathetic young man evolved. So, it was no surprise when Caleb's career path led him to help so many underprivileged students attain the means to get an education and/or find their own paths. He impressed upon his students that their current situation, no matter how difficult life was, it was not a life sentence; they could change the ending of their story. Although Caleb left us far too early, he will never be forgotten. In his thirty-three short years, his affect was eternal, and we will never know where his influence stops. His family and many close friends and colleagues will hold his memory in their hearts forever. Caleb was preceded in death by grandparents Donald Lupton and Gayle Lupton and grandmother Phoebe Sawyer. He is survived by parents Willie and Laurie Sawyer, brother Matthew and brother-in-law Anthony, grandparents Jeanette and Jerry Quesenberry, and Grandfather Tom Sawyer.
