Calvin Eugene 'C.E.' Tipton

July 9, 1933 — July 14, 2017

Rev. C. E. Tipton July 9, 1933 - July 14, 2017 On the morning of July 14, 2017, Rev. Calvin Eugene Tipton passed away, ending his battle with Alzheimer's in San Marcos, Texas. He was 84 years old. Brother Tipton was born in Carmona, Texas on July 9, 1933 during the depths of the Great Depression. The youngest child of Atwell Franklin and Clara Inez Tipton, he and his brother, James were raised during difficult times by a loving, hardworking, God-fearing family. Upon moving to Houston, Rev. Tipton worked at a machine shop for Hughes Tool Company before serving in the United States Army from 1953-1955. After his discharge, he attended Howard Payne College during which time he met Judy Beth Barnett at Woodsdale Baptist Church in Houston where her father J.T. Barnett pastored. They were married there in 1957, beginning their 59-year journey together. Rev. Tipton graduated from Howard Payne in 1960 and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1965. He embarked on a ministry that spanned 40 years. For the bulk of that time, he served as Senior Pastor at Second Baptist Church in Angleton where he faithfully shepherded the congregation from 1966 until 1999. During these years, the number of those he led to Christ, baptized, counseled and consoled are immeasurable. While ministering to and serving others was his vocation, Rev. Tipton lived by the creed that "you make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give." By this measure, he lived an impactful life indeed. An avid pilot, Rev. Tipton flew light engine aircraft until shortly after his retirement. It appealed to his meticulous nature and he felt close to God every time he flew. It is fitting, therefore, that his favorite hymn was "I'll Fly Away." True to the words of that old standard, Rev. Tipton has now flown away leaving in his wake a legacy of God's love. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy Beth; son, Mark and his wife, Teri; daughter, Suzanne and her husband, Tony; son, Drew and his wife, Shannon; brother, James; six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Services will be Saturday, July 22 at 10 am at Second Baptist Church in Angleton, Texas followed by burial at Angleton Cemetery. Public Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 21 from 6-8pm also at Second Baptist Church in Angleton.
