Obituary of Carmaleta Mass Carmaleta Mass, 83, left this earth on Sunday, December 24, 2017 in Pearland, Texas to celebrate Christmas in Heaven. Carmaleta, born on February 20, 1934 in Scipio, Oklahoma, was one of 6 children brought into the world by Calvin Haskell and Minnie Orvilla Purvis Lokey. Carma grew up on a farm and preferred to take care of her siblings, cook the meals, and clean the house rather than work in the fields picking cotton. Although she held numerous jobs throughout her life, she took great pride in her work as a wife and mother. Carma met the love of her life, Donald James Mass, at a dance in McAlester, Oklahoma. They were married shortly after on March 10, 1957 and moved to Sweeny, Texas. She always said she would have followed him anywhere and would've been happy living under a tree as long as she was with him. Although, she didn't know anyone in the area, it didn't take her long to make friends. She loved meeting people and socializing. She never met a stranger. Wherever she went, she was the life of the party. You definitely knew when she walked into a room. We often joked that the party didn't start until Carma arrived. In 1967, Carma and Don moved to Angleton, Texas where Don owned and operated a Phillip's 66 station in downtown Angleton. She was a loving and devoted mother staying home to take care of her 3 children. She would also help take care of the bills and paperwork associated with the service station. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making dresses and clothes for all of the family, matching dresses for the Barbie, square dance dresses and shirts for Don, and her oldest daughter's wedding gown. She continued to sew throughout her life. Her work was amazing and very professional. She was also a member of the Busy Bee homemakers club where she entered embroidery, needlework, and other handmade items in the Brazoria County Fair and won numerous awards. She took great pride in her handiwork. As her children grew older, Carma worked as a bank teller for ABC bank where she treasured the friends that she made there. She also was the Housing Director for the City of Angleton where she would inspect and write permits for HUD where she remained until she retired. Carma and Don were also accomplished square dancers where they were a member of the local square dance club. Aside from square dancing at local dances every Saturday night, they traveled to Galveston and California to participate in national events. They loved doing this together and enjoyed the friendships they made along the way. Carma and Don became parishioners of St. Basil's Catholic Church of Angleton in 1967 where she became a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Immaculate Mary 2134. She enjoyed her work as a Catholic Daughter and loved the friendships she made. She served as a Confirmation sponsor for numerous family members and friends. Carma grew up as a Baptist but converted to Catholicism when she married Don. When she was well, she never missed a Sunday. Attending church and participating in activities related to the church, such as the annual bazaars, were extremely important to Carma. Carma loved celebrating holidays and making them special for everyone. On Halloween, she would dress up as a witch and sit on her porch handing out treats for the neighborhood children. On Valentine's Day, she would make her famous shortbread heart-shaped cookies. On Thanksgiving, she loved cooking and baking all day for the entire family and then being too exhausted to eat. On Easter, she loved hiding the eggs and making the golden egg, and then helping the kids hunt them. As she got older, she would hunt the eggs. A love for the holidays, making them special for all, and spending them with family was instilled in her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Carmaleta was preceded in death by her husband, Donald James Mass, brother, Dean Lokey, and sister, Lula Lokey. She is survived by her son, Jim Mass and wife, Belinda of Pearland, daughters, Cindy Garcia-Meitin and husband, Eddy of Angleton, Robin Biscamp and husband, Mark of Huntsville; sisters, Juanita Ott of Eufala, Oklahoma, Val Woodruff of Clermont, Florida, Glenda Mitchell of Little Rock, Arkansas, Sheri Kresky of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Josh Mass, Cody Mass, Todd Mass, Jennifer Williams, Bonnie Garcia-Meitin, Emily Garcia-Meitin, Megan Biscamp, Amy Biscamp; great grandchildren, Bryndon Mass, Madilyn Mass, Alaina Mass, Everly Mass and Emma Rose Williams. Pallbearers will be Josh Mass, Cody Mass, Todd Mass, Jim Mass, Eddy Garcia-Meitin, and Mark Biscamp. Honorary pallbearers are Travis Wilcox, and Jonathan Williams. Funeral services for Carmaleta Mass, 83, of Angleton will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, January 3, 2017 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Angleton. Burial will follow at the Angleton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday, January 2, 2017 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church with a Christian Wake Service and Rosary beginning at 7:00pm.
