Dana Elizabeth Thomas

September 9, 1944 — August 29, 2012

Dana Elizabeth O'Bryant Thomas, 67, of Angleton passed away peacefully in the company of her beloved sons on August 29, 2012, after a short illness. She was born in Coffeyville, Kansas on September 9, 1944 to John L. (Jack) O'Bryant and Thelma Pendleton O'Bryant. After growing up in Kansas, New Mexico, and El Paso, Dana attended Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where she met our father, David Hunter Thomas, deceased. After our father's service in the U.S. Marines, they settled in League City, Texas, where they lived for many years. She is survived by her sons, Sean Thomas, P.E. of Houston, Texas, Dr. Patrick Thomas and wife Gail Thomas of Angleton, Texas, and their son Patrick McCurley of Fort Worth, Texas. Our mother was an educator, and she began her career by teaching her sons to read and instilling in them her strong belief in the importance of education and strong values. She then returned to college, receiving her BA in history at UH Clear Lake, and later her Master's degree. After completing her student teaching, Dana took a position at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas where she taught history for many years, and inspired her students in the importance of education, history, and tolerance. After thirteen years in this role, Dana decided to move to Hitchcock Elementary in Hitchcock, Texas, where she could work with younger children in the hopes of influencing her students more effectively. After ten more years working with youngsters, Dana retired from teaching. Over 23 years of teaching, Dana influenced many hundreds of young Americans to be better students and better citizens. Dana spent her retirement years fostering her beloved dogs. She later moved from League City to Angleton to be closer to her family, where she also made many new friends in her new neighborhood. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 8 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1713 North Tinsley Street, Angleton, TX 77515. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to SPCA of Brazoria County, P.O. Box 3291, Lake Jackson, Texas 77566, or the animal charity of your choice.
