Dolly Virginia Bailey

February 23, 1929 — November 16, 2021

Dolly Virginia Davis Bailey of Angleton, Texas was born February 23, 1929 and passed away November 16, 2021. She was born in Galveston, Texas, the second and last child of Thad Davis and Lottie Wolverton Davis. After a short time in Liverpool, Texas, they moved to Angleton and started a dairy on Downing Rd. The property is now Northside school, the tennis courts, and the new bus barn. Dolly received her drivers license at age 12 so she could drive the milk delivery truck because her mother didn't drive. When she got her state ID card in 2021, she said she had had a drivers license for 80 years. She attended the University of Texas in Austin while living with her brother and sister-inlaw until called home because of her father's ill health. She married Rex Bailey Jr., her high school sweetheart on November 27, 1948. They lived in Angleton while he farmed rice in the Rosharon area. Together they had two children, Rex III in 1950 and Juliann in 1954. Dolly went to work for Brazoria County in the 1960's, then was elected County Clerk and served from 1982 to 1998, working a total of 39 years for Brazoria County. Dolly never slowed after retirement. With Red Hats, playing bridge, flower gardening, crocheting, knitting, and cooking, she was always doing something. While watching TV, she would busy herself with handiwork. She loved making kolaches and bread, having family over for a meal, and working with the flowers at church. Dolly was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Bailey Jr., her parents, her parents in law, Della and Rex Bailey Sr., brother and sister-in-law, Thad and Nan Davis, sister-in-law Orville Bailey Mehl, son in law Gary Mitchell, and nephew Mike Davis.
