Doris Avera Mckinney

December 30, 1920 — November 18, 2013

Doris Avera Mizell McKinney, 92, passed from this life to her heavenly home on November 18, 2013. She was born on December 30, 1920, in Beaumont, Texas, to William Mizell and Maude Pillow. Doris came to Freeport in 1943, to work as a secretary at the Dow Chemical Co., for Dr. Oliver Buetel. It was there that she met Jim McKinney. They were married on May 13, 1944, in Jacksonville, Florida, while Ensign McKinney was stationed at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. They shared 56 blessed years of marriage, until Jim McKinney's death in October 2000. Doris was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ben Mizell, and three sisters, Oneco Johnson, Willa Briggs, and Geneva Gullette. She is survived by her sons, James McKinney, Jr. and wife Carol of Angleton, Dr. William McKinney of Jasper, Texas, and Dennis McKinney and wife Paula of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by two grandsons, Dr. James McKinney III and wife Dr. Tara McKinney and Mark Gil McKinney, seven granddaughters, Alison McKinney, Kelly Bohne and husband Major Brett Bohne, Dr. Christine Zewe and husband Scott Zewe, Catherine Shore and husband Capt. David Shore, Colleen McKinney, Melissa McKinney, and Christina McKinney, four great grandsons James McKinney IV, Michael McKinney, Henry Zewe, and Michael Bohne, and two great granddaughters Evelyn Bohne and Willa Shore. Doris was the quintessential homemaker and her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were the loves of her life on this earth. She personified humility and grace in all aspects of her life. Taking her desire to serve others beyond caring for her family, Doris was active in the First United Methodist Church of Freeport for many years as well as a long-time volunteer at the Angleton-Danbury Hospital. To the very end she remained an inspiration to those around her as well as a true and humble servant of God. She will be truly missed by all whose lives she touched. Visitation will be at the Palms Funeral Home in Angleton from 5 to 7 PM, Wednesday, November 20. Funeral services will be 10 AM, Thursday, November 21, at the First Presbyterian Church in Angleton, with burial in the Angleton Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Dr. James McKinney III, Mark Gil McKinney, Capt. David Shore, Thomas Johnson, John Gilbert, and Jeffrey Gilbert. The family would like to thank Ms. Sandra Trevino, Dr. Mikkillneni, the staffs at Carriage Inn, Elmcroft, and Country Village Care, Dr. Amin and the 4th floor nurses and aides at Brazosport Regional Hospital, and the hospice nurses at A-Med Health Care for their loving and compassionate care of our mother over the last several years of her life on this earth.
