Dr. Michael James Rees, 78, of Angleton, Texas, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Consuelo Broussard Rees, and brothers, Grover Rees, and Robert Rees. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 40 years, Betty Markham Rees; children, Dr. Ian Rees (Kayman), Austin Rees, and Mary Helen Rees; siblings, Dr. David Rees (Mable), Dr. Albert Rees (Kay), and Anne Schwind (Peter); and a host of other family and dear friends. Michael was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, on November 21, 1943. A scholar, he graduated from Georgetown University and later received his J.D. from Tulane Law School before pursuing his Doctorate in Anthropology at Tulane. Michael had a passion for Mayan culture and spent two years living in Mexico with Lacandon Maya Peoples, while writing his dissertation. He held fellowships with both Harvard and Yale University. He took pride in his community, serving as president for the Angleton Rotary Club, the Brazoria County Bar Association, and the Cradle of Texas branch of the Sons of American Revolution. He was a brilliant lawyer and worked as a professor for the University of Houston. He had a love for travel and for Texas Colonial History, which led him to play Father Muldoon in Austintown for many years. Strong in his faith, Michael looked forward to singing in the choir at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church every Sunday. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A rosary and mass for Michael will take place on Monday, December 27, 2021, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The rosary will begin at 10:00 am with mass to immediately follow. Service Details.
