Esther Louise Phillips

May 21, 1918 — June 24, 2017

Esther Heyne Phillips was born May 21, 1918, in Wharton County to Julias and Anna Heyne, German immigrants who made the area around Glen Flora their home. Esther Phillips died peacefully at her home in Bailey's Prairie on June 24, 2017, with her family at her side. Esther met her husband, Jimmy Phillips, while both were attending the University of Texas. Mr. Phillips graduated from the University of Texas and the UT law school and began a life of public service. He became a State Representative pre-WWII and afterward, a State senator representing Brazoria and surrounding counties. Esther and Jimmy had two sons, Jimmy Phillips, Jr. and Michael Phillips, both of whom graduated from law school at UT. Senator Phillips and his sons practiced law together until his death in 2002. Esther was a cultured, beautiful, sophisticated, genteel southern lady. Esther was also a savvy business woman, perfect hostess, loving wife and mother and was dedicated to her immediate and extended family. Esther was the youngest of six children born to Julias and Anna Heyne, and all the children grew up in Wharton County. Her three brothers, Manfred, Theo and Dan, and two sisters, Lydia and Bertie, predeceased her. She also enjoyed being close to her nieces and nephews, Pam, Peter, Rockie, Dianne, Peggy and Mary Belle. For almost a half century, between the early 1940's until the early 1990's, Esther graciously entertained innumerable guests and families of national and state prominence. She positively impacted the lives of many of the individuals who she touched with her friendship, advice and courtesy. Esther Phillips enjoyed her ranch property and her cattle; she made certain that things were done in the proper manner. She managed the ranch with precision and loved every minute of it, especially the frogs croaking around the lake after dark. Esther was many things to different people. She was a lady, wife, mother, grandmother, landowner, ranch manager and friend. She lived her life with respect and dignity. She performed her final act with that same grace and dignity. She left us with one last deep breath, happy to see her husband again. Esther Phillips is survived by her sons, Jimmy and wife Katherine, and Michael and wife Patricia, and seven grandchildren.
