George Bumpers

George Washington Bumpers III On Saturday, July 11, 2015, George Washington Bumpers III went to his heavenly home following a prolonged hospital stay for COPD at Trinity Mother Francis Hospital and The Hospice of East Texas in Tyler, Texas. He was born March 22, 1937, in Marquez, Texas to the late Haskell and Stella (Dempsey) Bumpers. He moved to Jones Creek as a young boy and later graduated from Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas in 1956. As a young man, he enjoyed dancing, drinking and raising hell! He married the love of his life, Judith Peterson on October 23, 1961. They were happily married for 53 years. They raised two beautiful daughters in Danbury, Texas and Stow, Ohio and were very active in the Danbury community. George spent countless hours as an auctioneer, donating his time to help various civic organizations raise money. He spent more than a decade auctioneering for the Brazosport Rotary Club Shrimp Boil and Auction and Muscular Dystrophy Association. After visiting an auction in Shiner, Texas, he and Benny Heiman started the St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church bazaar in Danbury. For almost the next two decades, George was a mainstay at the church bazaar and auction with his portable microphone in hand. George also served the community on the Board of Equalization for the Danbury Independent School District. He faithfully served his country in the Texas National Guard, being honorably discharged in 1962. He began his career as a carpenter working for Henry Pesarra, building custom homes in Lake Jackson. In 1964, he shifted his interests to commercial construction, working for Jones and Picard. George spent a portion of the 80's working for a contractor servicing the Department of Energy at the Strategic Oil Reserve in Freeport. He finally found his calling being employed for 16 years as the Chief Estimator/Construction Manager for the Norton Company in Stow, Ohio working in the petro-chemical industry. In 2001 he retired and moved to Tyler, Texas. George was able to travel the world while working for Norton. He traveled to many foreign countries including Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Germany, Austria, Venezuela, Taiwan, Chile and Brazil. His favorite foreign countries to visit were South Korea, Argentina, Thailand and Hungary. Survivors include his wife, Judith Peterson Bumpers; daughters Bethaney Bumpers Smith and husband Walt of Gilmer and Brittany Bumpers Allen and husband Jim of Mesquite; grandchildren Joshua Opperud and wife Pam, Caleb James-Bumpers Smith, Garrett Smith, Landry Allen and Lincoln Allen; sister Bertha (Babe) Bigbie ; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was further preceded in death by his Mother and Father; brother Wyndell Bumpers, sister Marie Marshall and niece Debbie-Jean Marshall. Calling hours are from 5-7pm with a Rosary after on Thursday, July 16th at Palms Funeral home in Angleton, TX. The funeral service will be held Friday, July 17th at 10am at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in Danbury. Interment will be in the Danbury Cemetary.
