George Martin Phillips III was a generous kind hearted man who never met a stranger and would give whatever he could to anyone in need. He lived his life with great zest, he was quick with a big smile and had a sincere interest in people, he made friends everywhere he went. On Saturday, November 21, 2020, George went to be with his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. George was born to parents Lena Wade Jennings and George Martin Phillips II in Plainview, Texas. He is from decedents of 4 Panhandle pioneer families: Phillips, Johnson, Jennings, and Van Zant. Grandfather Jennings was an XIT cowboy. Great grandfather Van Zant was first county treasurer of Randall County when it was originated. Great grandfather George Martin Phillips was county commissioner of Hale County where the court was built in 1910 and George M Phillips is on the corner of the present court house. His grandfather George Hollin Phillips was cofounding director of Olton State Bank and a county commissioner of Hale County. George placed his faith in Jesus Christ his savior at the age of 6 and although he stumbled away at times he never wavered in that for the rest of his life. He was a devoted man of faith his entire life wherever he was in the world he rose early for private devotions. He served as a deacon and bible study teacher. He was most happy when spending time with his family either watching ball games or simply helping them accomplish their goals. He was raised near Hart, Texas and attended Olton schools where he graduated as a National Merit Scholar. He graduated with several of the children of his dad's classmates and continued to cherish their friendships his entire life. He then went on to graduate from Texas Tech University while also working for 20-40 hours per week at a creamery and also operated his family farm. He was an avid reader, a farmer, and a lifetime sports fan. He worked in the mobile/manufactured housing industry most of his working years and also owned and operated Phillips Mobile Homes in Baytown, TX before retiring in 1996. During the 80's when the oil bust almost broke Houston, his lot was the only surviving dealership in Harris County due to his excellent management skills. In addition to a very full business career he was very active in his community He is a member of Community Baptist Church, The Saltgrass Antique and Equipment Club, Danbury Civic Club, Danbury Community Library Association, and Stephen F. Austin 500. Past member of both Baytown and Danbury Rotary Clubs and Danbury City Council. He is preceded in death by his parents and his infant sister, Donna Susan Phillips. He is survived by his wife Ann Swink Phillips, daughter, Stacey Phillips Matheson and husband, Tommy, granddaughters, Allison Matheson, fiance Austin Solomon, Hayley Matheson all of Danbury, TX. and a host of many relatives and good friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Community Baptist Church in Danbury, TX with David Smith and Randy Piatt officiating. Burial will follow in the Danbury Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Community Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Rick Rousser, Pat Phillips, Mike Phillips, William Stidman, Mike McGuire, Austin Solomon, and Tommy Matheson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Cleve Rousser, Ellison Williams, Bill Turnipseed, Pat Foster, Jimmy Matheson, Buz Babb, Billy Foster, Sam Hesler, Joe Swink, Jimmie Sandlin, and Larry Fancher.
