Hubert Larry Shaefer, Jr.
Hubert Larry Shaefer, Jr., 79, of Alvin, TX sadly passed away due to the complications arising from his cancer at home surrounded by his wife and daughters late last Sunday night.
Larry was born to Dessie Opal and Hubert Lawrence Shaefer, Sr., on May 24, 1944, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The new family moved to Texas City and was there in 1947 during the Texas City Disaster and till the end he was uneasy and anxious of the mosquito trucks from the memory of the smoke and loud trucks. After graduating from LaMarque High School in 1962, Larry worked as a LaMarque Police Department Dispatcher and then later as a Patrolman before going to college at Lamar Tech University. The summers of 1964 and 1967, he worked on the Apollo–LIM and NASA’s Nuclear Transport Communications Program Projects at NASA-JSC, working in the engineering office on the Lunar Lander design drawings. He got a scholarship and transferred to the University of Houston for the Electronics Technology Program and where he later met his ex-wife, Pam, with whom he had two beautiful daughters, Michelle and Robin. In 1969, he received a patent for a Mobile Telephone channel scan system and that concept is still used in our cell phones today. After his divorce, he opened a Radio Shack franchise store in LaMarque, TX and met his future wife Judy thereafter. They remained happily married for more than 41 years. He worked with and supported many law enforcement departments and municipalities. Larry and Judy had two booths at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for nine years (next to the Crown Cinnamon Roll Booth- big mistake, they are so yummy). Over the years, they owned five Radio Communications companies and three Cellular Tower corporations (in Texas, of course). They got to meet many interesting people and worked on some unusual projects. They also became friends with several fantastic people from Channels 2, 11 and 13 and helped with various stories along the way. They moved to Angleton and Larry served on the Executive Committee and Precinct Chairman for PCT 55 of the BCRP, US Census Complete Committee Representative for Brazoria County PCT 2, Freeport ECD board member to complete the Freeport Marina, Angleton’s Representative for the Brazosport Water Authority for more than three years and many other boards and committees in Houston and Harris County.
As adults, Michelle and Robin gave him three granddaughters Chloe, Mollie, and Noelle. He couldn’t have been prouder of them.
Larry and Judy retired in the Summer of 2022 and moved to Alvin, their current home, a month later, where he enjoyed watching the neighborhood livestock from his rocking chair on the back patio and tinkering around his new home. Unfortunately, Larry was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2022. He found a deeper faith in God during his last illness and spent many hours during treatment, hospital, and nursing home stays and finally his last months in home hospice in communion with the Lord with whom he resides with now.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dessie and H.L. Shaefer, Sr., his half-brother W.D. Prewitt, Jr., his parents-in-law Karl and Irma Robertson, his sister- and brother-in-law, Vicki and J.D. Shifflett and his stepson, C. Cody Williams. He is survived by his loving wife Judy Robertson Shaefer, daughters T. Michelle Muir (Scott Muir) and Robin Gibbs (Scott Gibbs), granddaughters Chloe Cameron (Steven Cameron), Mollie Muir and Noelle Cameron, and great-grandchildren Liam Cole and Charlie Elaine Cameron, brother-in-law, Rob Robertson and wife Carolyn and various nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the doctors TX Oncology in Webster, the staffs of Laurel Court, Choice and Absolute Hospices, Brian, Charles, Fred, Hector, and many others who helped throughout his illness.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the charity of your choice in Larry’s name.
