Jack Simmons

Born October 7, 1928, in Jasper, Texas to Mildred and Glenn Simmons. Died November 5, 2013 at home in Angleton, Texas. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the last years of WWII as an Aviation Radioman Third Class. Graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1951 and began teaching in Alvin. He married Edith Lynn Noble in Beaumont, Texas on October 5, 1951. He served in Alvin, Kirbyville, Baytown, and Morton before being named Assistant Superintendent, then Superintendent in Levelland, Texas. He came to Angleton in 1967 as Superintendent and served for 15 years. During that time he was active in community and church affairs. He often expressed his gratitude to Angleton citizens for their enthusiastic support of both school and community. Outstanding school boards made his job "the best in Texas." After retiring he had a small business in Angleton and then served as the Chief Appraiser for Brazoria County. He was a founding member of the Board of Texas Gulf Bank as well as serving with the Chamber of Commerce, the Hospital Board, Rotary Club, and as a Trustee of First United Methodist Church. He and his family travelled a lot in both the U.S. and Europe. There was always "another place he would like to see." Survived by his wife, Edith and daughters, Barbara and Lynn, and Martha Fry (Paul) and their sons Cody and Dustin and their families; his brothers, Glenn (Velta), of Georgetown and George (Jean), of Porter, Tx, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sue Powell, and his son, Mark. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a scholarship fund at Angleton High School. Contributions may be made to AISD A-Team/Jack Simmons Family Scholarship, 1900 North Downing, Rd., Angleton, TX 77515, or the First United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 219 North Arcola, Angleton, TX 77515 A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, at First United Methodist Church in Angleton.
