James Edward Collins, 86, of Angleton went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 4, 2015 with his family by his side. He was born on September 25, 1928 to James L. & Vera Collins in Dallas, TX. Funeral Services are set for Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Angleton, TX. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 5-7:00 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home. James moved to Angleton in 1943 and graduated from Angleton High School in 1947, he went on to North Texas State University and graduated with a degree in Industrial Arts and a permanent teaching certificate in June of 1951. He served our Country in the U.S. Army (1951-1954) and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was former President and General Manager of Collins instrument Company, Inc., Angleton, Texas, the Company was founded by his father J.L. Collins in 1946. He was past President (1963) of Houston Chapter of National Tooling & Machining Association. He was past President (1963) of Northside Elementary School P.T.A., Angleton, Texas. Elected to Angleton Independent School Board of Education in 1968, and re-elected four times before retiring from the board in 1983. During the fifteen years, served as Trustee, Secretary, Vice-President and President. James was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Angleton, Texas. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder, Trustee, and served on the Pastor Search Committee four different times. James was a member of the Angleton Chamber of Commerce for many years. He served on various committees including Industrial Development Committee. He was a member of Brazosport Chamber of Commerce for many years, again serving on various committees. James held a Private Pilot's license with instrument and multi-engine rating. James was a former member and past president (1961) of Angleton Rotary Club with over 35 years of perfect attendance. He held various offices and served on many committees during this time. He was a member of the Brazoria County United Way for many years. He served as a Board Member, as Vice-President in 1974, President in 1975, and served as Chairman of the Board. James received the William D. Colegrove Volunteer of the Year Award presented in 1982 by the United Way of Brazoria County. He served on the Welfare Planning Council of Brazoria County as well as on the Board of Directors for the Angleton Cemetery Association. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors for the Brazos Harbor Industrial Development Corp. He was chosen as Outstanding Citizen of Angleton and received the Community Service Award presented by the Angleton Chamber of Commerce in 1977. He was active in Boy Scouts of America for many years. He served in many capacities and on many committees over the years. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 1977. He also served as President of the Bay Area Council in 1980 & 1981. He was elected to the Board of Trustees for Stilwell Memorial Residence which is owned by the Retired Teachers of Texas. He served as Chairman of the Budget Committee. He was a member of Angleton Lodge #829 A.F. & A.M. where he received the Golden Trowel Award which was sanctioned by the Grand Lodge of Texas. He was preceded in death by his first wife Joan Collins, his parents, James L. & Vera Collins, and sister Verda Reed. He is survived by his wife of 18 years Dixie Davenport Collins, five children; Jamie Conner (Billy) of Angleton, TX, Donald Collins of Angleton, TX, Cynthia Raymond (Don) of Angleton, TX, Roger Collins (Camille) of Angleton, TX, Gordon Collins of Houston, TX, Five Grandsons; Billy Conner III (Nicki), Kenneth Conner, James Collins, Charles Collins (Kimberly) & Kristopher Raymond, Granddaughter Ashley Raymond, Four Great-Grandchildren; Parker & Kaylee Conner, Luke & Seth Collins, as well as many Step-Children, Step-Grandchildren and Step-Great Grandchildren who he loved dearly.
