Jimmie Russell Scherdin, Sr., 87, of Freeport, Texas passed away on October 14, 2015 in Houston, Texas. He was born August 14, 1928 in Beaumont, Texas to Joseph and Nettie (Means) Scherdin. Funeral Services are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton, Texas. The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation from 2:00 p.m. until service time on Sunday. Interment will follow at Phair Cemetery in Freeport, Texas. Jimmie was a lifetime member of Brazoria County and a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Angleton. He served his country as a United States Marine and in 1946-1948 he served in China. Jimmie was a 50+ year Master Mason in the Lake Jackson Lodge #1317. He was a hard worker and loved to hunt, fish, and golf in his spare time. He was also an airplane pilot who owned his own airplane, he logged over 1200 flying hours in his plane. Jimmie was a catcher and manager of the Lake Jackson Gators during 1946-1962 and a member of the 1956 team that went to World Series in California. He was a pipe welder and moved into safety for the Dow Chemical Company where he retired from. Jimmie was always good to his family. He would take his nephews hunting anytime that he could. Jimmie was an all-around good guy that had a heart of gold. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Helen Moore Scherdin, his son, Jimmie Russell Scherdin, Jr. and his wife Cathy, his cousin, Hunter Sheridan, his nieces; Mary Ann Slaughter and Susan Lebon and her husband Charles, his nephews; Pat Garrett (Myrtle), Skip Perry (Bettye), Rick Perry (Bette), Charles Underwood (Debbie), Randy Underwood (Kelly), Raymond Underwood (Margie), and Cameron Underwood, his grandchildren; Kevin Scherdin (Tiffany) and Russell Scherdin, his three great-grandchildren; Slaydon Thomas, Priscilla Scherdin, and Jenna Lee Scherdin, as well as his beloved dog Elli Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, his brother J.C. Garrett, his aunt, Violet Stix, and his uncle Ellis Scherdin.
