Judy C. Matula

September 25, 1944 — October 23, 2023

Judy C. Matula, a lifelong resident of Galveston and Brazoria Counties, passed away on October 23, 2023, at the age of 79. She was born on September 25, 1944, in Dickinson, Texas, to her beloved parents John and Tinnie Pate, who preceded her in death. Judy's passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

As a devoted wife, mother, and Mimi, Judy cherished her family above all else. She shared 28 beautiful years of companionship and marriage with her high school sweetheart, Don Wilburn, before their paths diverged. Together, they raised their beloved sons, Kelly Wilburn (wife, Kelly), and Chad Wilburn who survives her and will forever carry her memory in their hearts. Also left to survive Judy is her grandchildren: Camren Wilburn, Kaden Wilburn, Alayna Blum and Baylor Wilburn. Judy is also survived by her great-grandson, West Blum, along with her nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Judy is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Matula, her twin brothers, Johnny and Jerry Pate, and her sister, Joyce Joachimi.

Judy dedicated over two decades of her life to NASA, where she was an administrative assistant. Her talent behind the lens of a camera was unquestionable, as evidenced by the remarkable collection of breathtaking photographs she amassed throughout her lifetime. Her work captured the beauty of wildlife and florals, earning her recognition as a published photographer in a major magazine. These images will forever serve as a testament to her creativity and passion.

Alongside her professional achievements, Judy found joy and solace living at her beach house in Sargent, Texas. The serene surroundings allowed her to escape the daily pressures of life and embrace the tranquility of the ocean. In her early years, she cultivated her love for baking, honing her skills as an amazing cake designer. Her custom-crafted cakes were a source of delight for her children, who eagerly anticipated their personalized creations each year at their birthday parties.

Judy was also known for her meticulousness and cleanliness-her home was a testament to her exceptional attention to detail. During the holiday season, her floors sparkled to the point where one could confidently dine right off them. Her dedication to cleanliness was a true reflection of her character and commitment to providing a warm and welcoming environment for those she held dear.

The memory of Judy C. Matula will forever live on in the souls of those fortunate enough to have experienced her love and kindness. Her spirit will be fondly remembered and celebrated during the memorial services, to be held on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home, with Pastor David Catoe officiating.
