Leandra Lynn Harvey

January 23, 1964 — February 4, 2021

Leandra Lynn Fowler Harvey, 57, of Angleton, passed peacefully into heaven at her home in the presence of her family after a 10-year struggle to overcome breast cancer. Leandra was born in Houston, Texas to Virginia and Sammy Fowler on January 23, 1964. She was raised in Angleton, along with her two younger sisters, Kristina and Samantha. In her childhood, Leandra enjoyed many adventures with her family: fishing, hunting, campfires, crabbing, riding motorcycles, flying in planes, air shows, camping, and traveling together. She also enjoyed holidays with family, weekends at grandma's, church camp, 4-H, twirling, parades, and so much more. A gifted student, Leandra excelled not only in academics, but also in everything else she tried: singing, acting, dancing, and twirling. In athletics, she excelled in volleyball, track and field, and even rodeo. She went to state in the shot put, was a team roper in the rodeo, and was the most valuable player on the volleyball team. She graduated from Angleton High School in 1982, and attended Alvin Community College on a volleyball scholarship. Leandra worked in the insurance industry while she earned her associate's degree in Law Enforcement. She had decided to pursue a career in the Air Force, when a chance encounter with a former classmate led her to a career in the music industry instead. Leandra first met James Harvey on the playground in first grade, and had known him in school, but, after she graduated from college, her Aunt Linda reintroduced them at a dance where James was playing bass guitar in her Uncle Tim's band. Within a year, they had formed a singing partnership which blossomed into a romance that ultimately endured for 34 years. Leandra married her best friend James on May 28, 1989, and, while continuing to sing professionally with him, she accepted a part-time job at B&H Music Company in Clute, where James was teaching guitar. A natural leader, Leandra ultimately became the managing partner of B&H Music Company, and found much joy in sharing the gift of music with an entire generation of local musicians over the next 19 years. She played not only the piano, but also the flute, clarinet, saxophone, and violin. She was a master sound technician, and was highly respected as a technical consultant in that field. She wrote stories, poems, songs, and jingles, a few of which she recorded. She sang on a television commercial. She was a wedding singer and DJ, and she gave thousands of live singing performances. Leandra's creativity knew no bounds. Her grandmother taught her to sew and to crochet when she was a little girl, and she enjoyed crocheting hats, scarves and blankets, which she gave as gifts to friends and family members all her life. She earned a bachelor's degree in Applied Design and Visual Arts at the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 1999, and mastered the skills of drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, stained glass, photography, videography, and graphic design. Although her home was filled with her own artistic creations, she actually gave most of the art she created to friends as Christmas gifts. She learned to make her own jewelry. She enjoyed beading, and also maintained an extensive gemstone collection. Leandra also sought beauty in the natural world. She enjoyed growing plants and flowers. Her favorite flowers were yellow roses, sunflowers, and Gerber daisies. She enjoyed watching butterflies and birds, especially cardinals and hummingbirds. Seeking a more altruistic purpose for her life, Leandra sold her interest in B&H Music in 2008, and joined the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, where she recruited and served over 8000 girl scouts. She raised over $480,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Brazoria County as its Resource Development Director, but found her ultimate calling as a legal assistant. She loved being able to use her knowledge and experience to help people. She was preparing to enter law school when the cancer that she had overcome in 2011 came back. Leandra was adventurous, and lived life to the fullest. In the short time she was here, she traveled to every state (except North Dakota), Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the British Isles. Her favorite places were the Olympic Peninsula and the San Juan Islands in Washington State. She enjoyed hiking, biking, camping, skiing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, and cruising. She enjoyed bowling as well as the many adventures she experienced with her "bowling buddies." In 2008, Leandra was the top amateur female bowler in the Houston area, and in 2009, she had the top amateur women's team in Texas. She was extremely competitive, and pursued excellence in everything she did. Leandra had an innate sense of justice, and she was fearless in pursuing it. At the same time, she was gentle and caring, especially to children and animals, who were drawn to her intuitively. Her connection with animals was such that she was often called "Dr. Doolittle." Leandra accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at church camp when she was age 13, and she was baptized in the Medina River. She loved God, and served him all her life. For the past 13 years, Leandra was a worship leader at Richwood First Baptist Church, and at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Leandra possessed an indomitable spirit that was an inspiration to everyone who met her. She held herself to the highest moral and personal standards. Her work ethic was legendary. When her cancer returned in 2019, she continued to work, to play, to sing, and to perform at the highest levels in spite of the pain she experienced. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Leandra is survived by her husband of 31 years James Harvey Jr; parents Sammy and Virginia Fowler; sisters Kristina Davis and Samantha Fowler; sister-in-law Kathy McAlexander; aunts Linda Jones, Joyce Grosshans, Tammy Fowler, and Joan Harvey; uncles Tim Jones and Terry Fowler; nieces Krystle Sargent, Kassie Parsons, Katrina Davis, Meaghan Boazman, Emily Garcia, Teegan Garcia, Tabitha McAlexander, and Sarah Closs; nephews Kaleb Boazman, Brent Davis, Derek Harvey, and Thomas Closs; cousins Mendy and Floyd Sparkman, Tobey and Danielle Jones, Sammy Jones, Justin and Audrey Caylor, Mike and Teresa Mills, Adam Fowler, and Jordan Fowler, 13 great-nephews, three great-nieces, and many other family and friends.
