Luther Loyd Davis

September 12, 1922 — June 20, 2012

Luther Loyd Davis, age 89, slipped away to be with his Lord and Savior on June 22, 2012. He was affectionately known as Brother Davis to most, whether in the church or the community. All knew him to be kind, generous, gentle, and compassionate - truly the good Samaritan. He was the kind of man that if you knocked him down, he would apologize for being in your way. L.L. Davis was born in Yoakum, TX. on September 12, 1922 to Mack and Nora Davis. He graduated Yoakum High School and then soon joined the Air Force where he served for four years. He had been given papers to report with his fighter group to travel overseas to battle just days before the war ended with the bombing of Japan. After the war, he met the love of his life, Viola Webster. They were married in Natchez, MS in 1950, and remained together as husband and wife for almost 60 years. While the Davis' never had any children of their own, he became a father figure to many, both young and old. Brother Davis was loyal to his wife until the very end. In her latter days, he made numerous trips to the nursing home each week to spend time with her and personally feed her. He did this until the day of her passing in 2010. It was right after his marriage to Viola that Brother Davis went to work as a security guard for Dow Chemical. He retired there after almost 35 years. He also worked the skimmer gate which dictated that he and Viola live inside the plant for a number of years. You couldn't visit them without a Dow badge! Not only was Brother Davis loyal to his wife and work, he dedicated his life to his church, First Assembly of God in Angleton. The couple gave their lives to Jesus Christ in 1958 and became members of the local assembly. He was there through six pastors and fulfilled many different positions. The activity building at the church was named after him in honor of his faithfulness. His heart and soul was poured into his church. He will be greatly missed. Luther L. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Davis, his sisters: Velma Davis, Irene Sweeten, Vergie Jeans, Dorothy Johnson, Gladys Sweeten, and brothers Louis Davis and Raymond Davis. He is survived by one sister, Ruby Higdon of Cleveland, TX along with several nieces and nephews. Brother Davis's life will be celebrated at a service to be held on Tuesday at 10am at First Assembly of God Church located at 329 N. Anderson in Angleton. Pastor Mike Hammonds will be presiding. There will also be a public viewing to take place at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton on Monday evening from 6-8pm.
