Margot Elizabeth Poppinga

November 21, 1931 — August 7, 2014

Margot Elisabeth Poppinga, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 2:55 pm. Margot was born in Konigsberg, East Prussia November 21, 1931 to Rudolf and Anna Hubner. In 1945, at the age of 14, when Russia invaded East Prussia during the end of WWII, she walked across Poland and escaped to North East Germany. There she met her husband of 59 years, Helmut (Henry) Poppinga Sr. In 1959, the couple and their two daughters, Sigrid and Christina, immigrated to the U.S. and made their way to Houston, TX, ending up in Oyster Creek, Texas in 1961. Margot is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Chrissie Rea, great granddaughters, Madison Hinson and Willow Trahan. She is survived by her husband Helmut Poppinga Sr. of Oyster Creek, daughter Sigrid Maiden and husband Terry of Oyster Creek, daughter Christina Rexses and husband Byron of West Columbia, daughter Evelyn Chancey and husband Roy of Oyster Creek, son Hinrich Poppinga and wife Linda of Angleton, son Helmut Poppinga Jr. and wife Christine of Brazoria, and son Robert Poppinga of Angleton. She leaves behind 16 grandchildren: Rachel Hinson and husband Tracy of Clute, Jessica Trahan of California, Jeff Jackson and wife Tina of Oyster Creek, Sabrina Vandergrifft and husband Harold of Oyster Creek, Joshua Jackson of West Columbia, Megan Dumesnil of West Columbia, Jeremy Critchlow and wife Sharie of Kentucky, Shawn Critchlow of Richwood, Christopher and Katelyn Poppinga of Angleton, Leslie, Haley and Casey Poppinga of Brazoria, Misty Weber, Robert Poppinga Jr. of Angleton, Amber Poppinga of Lake Jackson, Lonnie Parker of Danbury, 25 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson. There were many who knew her as Omi even though there was no relation. Margot was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who loved being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She never had a driver's license or drove a car. Her strong German accent stuck with her all her life, and those who knew her always commented about it. Margot had many friends whom she loved, and who also loved her dearly. She was a very giving and honest person. Even though she was confined to a wheelchair, she would fold clothes, sweep, prepare food, and do anything she could to help out. During the last several months of her life with us, she was cared for by Hospice, and always bragged on the care she received from her nurses. Those who never met her surely missed out. We will all miss her dearly. Pallbearers will be Jeff Jackson, Joshua Jackson, Jeremy Critchlow, Shawn Critchlow, Chris Poppinga, and Robert Poppinga Jr. Visitation will be held at Palms Funeral Home 2300 E.
