Marion Lee Green

June 5, 1926 — August 20, 2014

Marion L. Green, 88, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus Wednesday evening, August 20, 2014. He spent his last precious days visiting with loved ones and saying good-bye. Born June 5, 1926 to Nathan and Jewell Silvey Green in La Marque, Texas, Marion grew up in Velasco where he enjoyed a happy and adventurous childhood with his older brother Nathan Earl Green. He spent his life in Southern Brazoria County and always understood the importance of home, family and friends. Marion suffered from tuberculosis when he was eight years old and had to spend a period of time in a West Texas sanatorium for children with the disease. Thankfully, the treatment cured his illness and he rejoined his family. During the Great Depression, the family moved to a small home with acreage in Jones Creek where they produced most of their own food. When the Freeport Sulfur Company moved into town Marion's father acquired work and they returned to their home in Velasco and resumed "city life." These events shaped Marion to be an independent, vastly skilled and grateful man. After graduating from Freeport High School in 1943, he entered the United States Air Force where he had been cleared for pilot training, hoping to follow in the foot-steps of his brother, a member of the Flying Tigers. However WWII was coming to a close and pilots were not in demand so Marion volunteered to become a motorcycle MP, patrolling the perimeter of Ellington Field. This vocation was a perfect fit thanks to the high school years he spent performing hair-raising tricks on his Harley Davidson. After the Air Force Marion married Virginia Cameron and attended The University of Texas at Austin for two years, returning home to work for Dow Chemical. Never forgetting the hard lessons of the Depression, Marion was always thankful for his good, stable job at Dow where he worked for 30 years. He had a strong work ethic and enjoyed managing the people who worked for him, improving technical processes and ensuring safety. He was a member of the Velasco Masonic Lodge, Number 757. Marion enjoyed sailing, fishing, hunting, camping, beach-going, floating down the Guadalupe, and more. He designed and built several homes as well as surf boards, a sail boat, a camper, and numerous deer blinds. He could design and build almost anything and took great pleasure in doing so. Marion had an inquisitive mind and never lost his interest in learning new things. He was always an avid reader of fiction and had a deep love for nature, both of which he passed on to his children. Later in life Marion was join in marriage with Davy Coughlin and they enjoyed 30 years of happiness. Davy was his best friend and soul mate. Her children and grandchildren were a wonderful addition to his life and they grew to love and respect him. Marion was always a good provider for his family and gave his children the greatest gift - unconditional love. Marion was preceded in death by his parents Nathan and Jewell, his son Cameron Green and brother Nathan Green, plus aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous life-long friends. He is survived by his wife Davy Coughlin Green, son Charles Green, daughter Patty Green (Dan Swords), Gloria Hobbs (Larry), Kent Green, Mark Coughlin (Bonnie), Shelly Minniti (John), Lyndel Kodesch (Charlie), grandchildren James Madison Hetherwick, Elizabeth Houck (Nick), Lee Green, Ingrid Wohleber (David),Blaine Moritz (Mary), Heather Hooks (Ben), Anthony Minniti, Amber Minniti, Colton Coughlin, Tyler Coughlin, and family friend John Gambino.
