Mary Rachel Davis

Mary Rachel Smith Davis, 87 passed away January, 2, 2012 at Carriage Inn in Lake Jackson, TX. Mary, the youngest of eight children, was born January 12, 1924 in Alvin, TX to Henry and Cordalle Knoppe Smith. She was raised in the Alvin/Rosharon area, graduated from Angleton High School and later attended Blinn Junior College and worked for Hughes Tools after college. On January 27, 1944 she married a navy man, Jim Davis and the couple had their first child, Mary Adele, shortly after. She took a job with DOW chemical company and gave birth to her second child, Ernie. Mary then worked for the Tuberculosis Association of Brazoria County and later the Draft Board and finally she worked full time with her husband at the family carwash. She was a prior member of First Baptist Church of Angleton and was most recently a member of First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Davis; daughter, Mary Adele Davis French; parents, Henry & Cordalle Smith; sisters, Daisy Ruth Smith and Julius Leathea Smith; brothers, Leroy Smith, Joe Smith and William Henry Smith. Mary is survived by her son, Ernie Davis and wife, Barbara of Lake Jackson; brothers, Jesse Lee Smith and wife, Helen and Willie B. Smith and wife, Bobbie; grandchildren, Todd Elliott French of Luling, TX, John Jacobs and James Earnest Davis of Lake Jackson, TX and Megan Ann Davis of New York City, NY; great grandchildren, Emma L. Jacobs and Patrick Jacobs of Lake Jackson. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Palms Funeral Home from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. with funeral services to begin at 1:30 p.m. Honorary pallbearers will be James Davis, John Jacobs, Todd French, Drew Davis and Stephen Clay. In lieu of normal remembrances, please make donations to the First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson Church/Mission Fund at 401 Yaupon, Lake Jackson, TX 77566.
