July 25, 1939 — May 13, 2016

Mickey McGaugh July 25, 1939 ~ May 13, 2016 Michael Calvin "Mickey" McGaugh passed from the world to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, May 13, 2016 while at his home with his devoted wife of 20 years, Nancy, and his son and daughters. Mickey was born July 25, 1939 to L.T. and Francis McGaugh, who preceded him in death, in the Pearl of the Prairie in El Campo, Texas. Mickey attended Wharton County Junior College and transferred to University of Texas to study Chemistry. Mickey finished his undergraduate work at Sam Houston State University where he obtained his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Chemistry. Mickey began his long, productive career with Dow Chemical in 1964, obtained several patents and was instrumental in obtaining several others. Many of Mickey's technological innovations in the 1960s and 70s helped shape the plastics and packaging industry, some of his discoveries still have an impact today, 40 year later. Highlights of Mic's career include leading Dow's Hydrocarbons Research from 1986-1990 - where he developed Dow's expertise in Hydrocarbons Process Research. From 1984-1986, Mic was the Senior Manager for Organic Process Research leading Dow R&D efforts for the Oil & Gas industry. From 1981-1984, Mic led Dow's Polyethylene Technology Center where he helped grow Dow Polyethylene world-wide. Mic held additional leadership roles in the 1970s where he had a positive impact on Dow technology and on many Dow people. Mickey retired from Dow after 29 years of service. In 1994, Mic returned to teaching at Brazosport College - a job he began as an evening instructor when the college opened 40+ years ago. Mickey was still teaching online courses through the spring semester of 2016, even though his health begin to fail. He loved teaching nursing students and training future Dow employees. Although he loved the time and contributions he made at Dow, Mickey was most proud of his time at Brazosport College, where he had the opportunity to help thousands of young men and women advance their technical careers, obtain great jobs, and improve their lives. Outside of work, Mickey loved to surf fish on Quintana Beach and Surfside with his partner and wife, Nancy. Mickey was one of the best gardeners in Brazoria County and loved sharing his bounty with friends all over the county. Mickey was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Angleton for 51 years. At Church, Mickey taught Sunday School and served the church in numerous capacities. One of the most memorable was his annual demonstration of his cooking talents…preparing vast quantities of beans for the church bazaar for 23 years. Mic was a leader in the community; serving as Trustee on Angleton Danbury General Hospital and on the Hospital Board for 10 years. Mickey worked as a Dow liaison with the Chamber of Commerce and the United Way for a similar period of time. It's also noteworthy that Mickey was a 9 gallon blood donor, a mark for which he was particularly proud. In addition to being a community leader, Mickey was an Endowed Member with the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. One of his traits that will live on is the sense of humor that he shared with everyone around him. Friends, family, and acquaintances all have numerous "Mickey stories" that always bring the rooms to laughter when retold.
