Miss Katherine Laidlaw 'Kitty' Palmer

February 27, 1919 — January 16, 2016

Katherine Laidlaw Palmer, 96 of Sweeny, Texas was lovingly called "Kitty" or 'Ms. Kitty". She was our beloved mother and grandmother who passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Sweeny Community Hospital. Kitty was born on February 27, 1919 in Portland, Oregon to Ruth Van Name Laidlaw and William John Laidlaw Sr. Left to cherish her memory are her 3 children: Katherine (Kay) Brightwell and husband Jimmy of Sweeny, Karyl Ruth Cardullo of St. Mary's, Ohio, and Patterson Kirk Palmer of San Angelo, Texas. She had three grandchildren: David Kirk Brightwell and wife Janie of Pearland, Texas, Mary Katherine Brightwell of Katy, Texas, and Francis Paul Cardullo and wife Orlandys of Maracay, Venezuela. There are also numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Jeanne Laidlaw Crum, brother Robert Wallace Laidlaw and brother William John Laidlaw Jr. Kitty grew up in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. She graduated from Highland Park High School and went on to attend Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans for three years where she majored in art. The next year she transferred to the University of Texas. She loved art and took classes at the Dallas Art Institute after leaving UT. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Kitty loved working with children, being with people, and teaching art to all ages. She never met a stranger. She taught art in Fort Worth at the Women's Club and Junior Women's Club. She also taught private art classes at her home. In the summer, she taught art at Carrizo Lodge in Ruidosa, New Mexico. In 1974 she moved to Sweeny to take care of her grandchildren where she continued to teach private art lessons and was a substitute teacher at Sweeny ISD. She helped raise many of the children of Sweeny by taking care of them in the church nursery at First United Methodist Church. She also loved playing golf, doing needlework and gardening. In her later years she worked at West Brazos Cares, took care of the OA's (Older Adults) at church, and was a member of United Methodist Women (UMW). Throughout her life she touched many people and will be dearly missed by her family and the community. A celebration of life service will be held on January 23, 2016 at 2:00 pm. It will be at the First United Methodist Church in Sweeny. Reverend Nancy Cobbs will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Brazos Cares, 1008a E. Ashley Wilson Rd, Sweeny, Texas 77480 or the First United Methodist Church, Sweeny. Services are under the direction of Palms Funeral Home in Angleton, Texas.
