Nadine Burton, 93 was received by her Lord Jesus on Tuesday, Nov 27, 2012 in Columbus, Texas. She was born in Stringtown, Newton County, Texas on May 17, 1919 to Alvah Anderson Phelps and Alma Rowena Humphreys Phelps. She grew up in Newton, Texas and was valedictorian of her class. She married Arthur Lee Burton on Mar 5, 1938 in Jasper County, Texas and had three daughters - Helen Nadine, Alma Lynn, and Ethel Lee. She worked for the Newton Herald and Beaumont Enterprise newspapers while in Newton. She became a housewife, mother, saleswoman, seamstress and was involved in school activities while raising her three daughters first in Pasadena, Texas and 17 years in Angleton. After Arthur Lee retired from Dow Chemical and started working for the Richmond State School, they moved to Richmond where they lived until 2001. Nadine worked as a secretary for the state school and retired in 1979. They loved to travel, go to gospel singing events, and visit family. Nadine was very active in genealogical family history and loved to write poems which she could quote from memory 40 years later. She made many friends easily with a ready smile and a sense of humor and was genuinely interested in people. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years - Arthur Lee Burton, her sister Tillie Lorene Gilchrist, and brother Riley Anderson Phelps as well as her very close in-laws Edgar "Mel" Burton (Rebecca), Felix Burton (Billie), Henry Burton (Christine) and Rebecca Ethel Carr (William). She is survived by daughters Helen Nadine Vasut (Gene) of Angleton, Alma Lynn Crawley (Hank) of Waco, and Ethel Lee Morris (Tom) of Lake Jackson. Grandsons: John Vasut (Pella) of Angleton, Alan Vasut of Angleton, Brent Crawley (Marlene) of Alexandria, VA, Geoff Crawley (Mariah) of Sola, Norway, and Stephen Morris of Lake Jackson. Granddaughters: Donna Cranfill (Bruce) of Angleton, Stefanie Morris of Lake Jackson, and Barbara Shuler of Houston. Sixteen (16) great grandchildren and Ten (10) great-great grandchildren She is also survived by one sister-in-law Pauline Phelps of Baton Rouge, nephews: John Burton (Carole), Edgar Burton (Joe Ann), Gilbert Burton (Linda), Roland Phelps, Gene Gilchrist (Jewel), Ronnie Gilchrist, Ramsey Gilchrist (Judy), and Milton Gilchrist (Sheryl),. Nieces: Rebecca Carr Vickers (Paul), Paulette Donellan (Buzz), and Vera Gilchrist Hawk (Richard). The family would like to thank the River Oaks Health and Rehab Center in Columbus , Texas for their excellent extended care and to the AseraCare hospice team led by Amanda Ulrich for their loving care of Nadine. Pallbearers will be John Vasut, Alan Vasut, Steve Morris, Derrick Dees, Darren Dees, Brent Crawley and Cody Vasut. Services will be at Palm Funeral Home on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 11:00 am with visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Graveside Services will follow at Angleton Cemetery.
