Anna Catherine Veselka, affectionately known as Nancy, left to meet her Blessed Savior on May 29, 2024. Born on December 5, 1929 as the second of eight siblings, the young Nancy learned quickly how to thrive in the Depression era and brighten her parents’ home with her lively personality. She grew to be a courageous and passionate woman who said “No” twice before her beloved husband finally succeeded at wooing her away from her life in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to Fort Huachuca, Arizona. After Steve completed his active military duty, they moved to Houston, Texas. The young family moved to Pearland, Texas in 1962 and finally settled on the Veselka family farm in Angleton, Texas in 1985.
In addition to being the mother of two children, Nancy held several positions as an accountant. She developed her love for numbers working for the power company in Summit Hill Pennsylvania. After her children entered school she took a part-time position at Koza’s in Pearland. That position quickly blossomed into a full-time career. She worked at South Texas Kenworth, defiantly quit a different job after refusing to ‘cook the books’, and at her final position helped incorporate the first computerized accounting system at the Houston Symphony. Retiring in 1990 she continued to consult for the Symphony for several years. She and Steve raised cattle on the farm and she loved playing video games. She moved to Cary, North Carolina in 2016 to be closer to her daughter and became a champion bingo player at both Stone Ridge and Jordan Oaks retirement communities.
Throughout her life Nancy remained steadfastly devoted to Jesus and held tight to her Catholic faith. She belonged to the Legion of Mary and the Catholic Daughters in Danbury, Texas. Her final act was uttering “Amen” as those around her helped “Consecrate the last two hours of her life to the Virgin Mary”.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Steve Veselka; her parents Victor Joseph Ploplis and Anna Cecelia Kralik; her brothers Ed Ploplis, John Ploplis, Vincent Ploplis, and Frank Pope.
Nancy is survived by many people who she loved: her daughter Virginia and spouse Roger Gorman of Holly Springs, North Carolina; her son Dr James and spouse Jeannine Veselka of East Columbia, Texas; grandsons Kyle Veselka with fiancé Melanie Bellinoski, Paul Gorman, Ryan Veselka with spouse Mary Veselka, Nicholas Gorman with spouse Abby Gorman, and Phillip Gorman with spouse Hunter Reese; great grandchildren Leah Veselka, Amelia Veselka, Leo Gorman, Dean Veselka, and Ezekiel Gorman; brother Joseph and spouse Jean Ploplis of Dayton, Ohio; sister Barbara and spouse Peter Carton of Locust, New Jersey; and sister Victoria Biersack of Fredericksburg, Virginia. She had so many beloved friends and neighbors that they cannot all be enumerated, but she holds a special love for close friend Daryn Vrazel and his family in Danbury, Texas.
Nancy remains in our hearts. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Danbury, Texas on June 6, 2024 with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held at Saint Anthony’s on June 7, 2024, at 10:00 am. Graveside service to follow at the Catholic Cemetery in Danbury.
