Rosalie Louise (Garton) Van Ness, 83, of Alvin, Texas, passed away on November 27, 2024. She was born on January 28, 1941, in Wasco, California, to John Lucas and Opal Lorine (Smith) Garton.
A graduate of Texas City High School, Rosalie married James Ray “Jim” Van Ness on June 6, 1958, in Texas City. Together, they built a beautiful life and family, eventually settling in Alvin in 1968, the place they called home.
Rosalie was first and foremost a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She thrived on taking care of her family and cherished every moment spent with them. Her children and grandchildren recall her dedication, as she rarely missed a recital, school performance, or athletic event.
Rosalie had a competitive spirit and loved bowling and playing cards. Her daily routine included reading, sudoku, crosswords, and cryptograms, reflecting her sharp intellect and problem-solving skills. Baseball season was her favorite time of the year, and she was one of the Houston Astros' most loyal fans.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents, John and Opal Garton; her son, Keith Van Ness; her sisters, Wanda Jones, Charlene Stewart, and Linda Parrish; her sister-in-law, Roberta Garton; her brothers-in-law, Henry Stewart, Rick Jones, and Brian Parrish; her sons-in-law, Michael Loy and Thomas Fitzgerald; and her daughter-in-law, Ann Henscey.
Rosalie is survived by her loving family, including her children: James “Jimbo” Van Ness, Jr. (Becky), Tracy Loy, Scott Van Ness, Kerry Guthrie (Greg), and Cindy Fitzgerald; her brother, John R. Garton; her grandchildren: Crystal Carbone (Tony), Jeff Smith, Taryn Elliott (Bean), Sydnee Smith (Gavin), Zackory Guthrie (Jessica), Skyler Margoliner (Bobby), Gavin Guthrie (Cassidy), Thomas Fitzgerald (JoAnn), Gregory Fitzgerald, and Elaine Gilbert; and her great-grandchildren: Catherine, Claire, Caroline, Ian, Isaac, Colt, Paisley, Emery, Blaine, and Sadie. She is also remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Words cannot convey how appreciative we are and how blessed to have had such wonderful care for our mother over the past few years. From Liz, to Lisa Ragland's team of ladies, to Lisa and Brenda and the Choice Hospice Team, to the ladies at Ks Personal Care Home. She loved you all, and we love you too!
Rosalie's legacy of love, devotion, and strength lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.
