Virginia L. Childers

May 21, 1935 — September 8, 2020

Virginia Valentina Luera Childers, 85, went to be reunited with the love of her life and her Heavenly Father on September 8th, 2020 surrounded in love by her family. Born in Rio Grande City, Texas on May 21, 1935, to Francisco and Siria Villarreal Luera, Virginia was the youngest of four siblings: Arturo, Consuelo and Roberto Luera. After hearing personal testimonies from local missionaries at the age of 12 years old, she met and accepted the Lord into her life. After getting married at 15 years old, she gave birth to her three children: Felipe Jr., Santa Rosa, and Hipolito "Paul" Solis. She then worked at DOW Cafeteria while attending First Baptist Church of Sweeny as a Sunday School Teacher in the Hispanic Department alongside her children. After getting a divorce in the late 60s, Virginia continued to work hard as a single mother by having multiple jobs including working at PicWic Cafeteria, Charlies' Restaurant, and as a seamstress for Brazosport Mattress and Upholstery where she would meet the future love of her life, Jerry Wayne Childers. Within that time, she began attending Temple Baptist Church in Clute, Texas before moving and continuing to serve at Central Baptist (now Primera Iglesia Baptista de Clute) with her daughter Rosa. Early in 1970, Virginia opened her own business Brazoswood Upholstery full-time alongside her three kids, and at age 40 years old went back to school to obtain her GED. About 6 years later, she reunites with and married the love of her life, Jerry Wayne Childers, in July of 1976 at Temple Baptist Church before welcoming their first grandchild in August of that next year. They then began serving together at Templo Baptist Church in Angleton, Texas as Sunday school teachers, treasurers, deacon/deaconess, all while Virginia continued her service to the Lord as a Women's Missionary Union (WMU) leader. In hopes of helping build up a church, the Childers' moved to Northway Baptist in Angleton where they served as Deacon/Deaconess and leaders of the Hispanic classes for over 20 years. Due to the recession in the mid-80s, while continuing to help her husband at their upholstery shop at night, Virginia also began her almost 25-year day-time career at Eckerd's in Angleton. Four years after welcoming their first great-grandchild, Virginia retired not long after the passing of her beloved husband Jerry in 2003. From there, she lived primarily with her son, Paul, and moved from Angleton to Brazoria to San Antonio where she then attended Western Heritage Cowboy Church in Pipe Creek, Texas alongside her granddaughter, Nathalie. After having health troubles, she moved back to Angleton with her oldest granddaughter April where she continued her service to the Lord through Primera Iglesia Bautista de Clute and later Second Baptist Church in Angleton. Having dedicated her life to serving others in the name of Jesus, nothing made Virginia happier than getting to spend every waking moment leading people to Jesus Christ. Though she was known for being very blunt and headstrong, Virginia's intentions were always driven by the fact that she truly cared, loved, and wanted the best for every individual God had put in her path. Though she was a mother and grandmother to only a few, she never met a stranger and was truly a "Granny Gran" to all. She is preceded in death by her parents: Siria and Francisco Luera, brothers: Arturo, and wife Beatrice Luera, Roberto and wife Chavela Luera, sister Consuelo Luera, and beloved husband Jerry Wayne Childers. Survivors include her three children: Felipe Jr. and wife Toni Solis, Santa Rosa and husband Tom Flores, Hipolito "Paul" Solis.
