Wanda Gail Guthrie

December 12, 1951 — December 5, 2021

This world lost a beautiful, strong & sassy soul on Sunday, December 5, 2021, when the Angels called Wanda Gail Guthrie home. Wanda was born on December 12, 1951, in Bonifay, Florida to Joseph Wilburn Odom and Laura Rebecca Lee. She was the oldest of three siblings, always looking after her brother Rick and built-in best friend and sister, Rita. Laura met and married James "Poppy" Graham, and the family moved to San Antonio. Wanda made friends easily and the years passed quickly. She soon graduated and was soon pregnant with her only son and joy of her life, Christopher Wayne Hildenburg. Her days were filled with happiness as she spent time working and raising Chris. One night at a dancehall, she met a hard-working, fun-loving man named Donald Mabry Guthrie and that was it. Wanda soon followed Don to a little town named Danbury, Texas and the family enjoyed small town family life. Wanda worked for several years at First National Bank until she decided to change careers and became a road inspector for TXDOT-a job from which she would eventually retire. During this time, they found a quiet piece of property on a small country road in Angleton. She, Don & Chris began raising cattle and enjoying time on the porch drinking sweet tea. Wanda's life changed when Chris married and blessed her with two beautiful grandsons, Samuel Ray and Benjamin Wayne Hildenburg. They were her whole world. A few years later her son Chris passed unexpectedly, and her world changed again. She and Don found joy watching Sam and Ben roam through the pasture, rubber boots on, and bb guns in hand looking for mischief. Enjoying a little mischief was a favorite past time for Wanda, so she spent hours laughing at the boys' adventures. She loved road trips with her bestie Michelle and she and Don entered cook-offs, winning several prizes and having a ball. She kept everyone in line with a look or a sassy comment and kept Don in line by threatening to make meatloaf for dinner. She never met a stranger and easily kept friends laughing. Wanda fought a battle with her health in recent years and on December 5, she decided it was time to join her son, grandson, siblings and other loved ones in Heaven. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and rest assured, there is laughter in Heaven today. She is preceded in death by her father, Joseph Odom, mother, Laura Graham, stepfather, James Graham, her mother and father-in-law Seth Mabry Guthrie and Margie Guthrie, her brother Rick Odom, sister Rita Meadows, brother-in-law Jeff Meadows, son Chris Hildenburg and grandson Sam Hildenburg. She is survived by her husband Don Guthrie, stepbrother Mike Graham & his wife Sybil, stepsister Sherrie Graham, stepson Danny Guthrie and his wife Joni, daughter in law Sydney Hildenburg, grandson Ben Hildenburg, niece Jennifer Morton and husband Brian, nephew Jory Odom and his wife Giovanna, niece Rebecca Odom, and niece Rita Odom, along with many cousins, great nieces and friends.
