William Cornelius “WC” Jones, 98, also lovingly known as Uncle Dub, Acornhead, Papaw, Pop, Poppi and Grandpa, slipped off his earthly coat and entered heaven’s gate on May 13, 2024.
William was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country as a Fireman First Class aboard the USS Crossley from May 31, 1944 to February 26, 1946, combat duty in the South Pacific during World War II where his ship participated in the Okinawa Campaign and experienced Kamikaze attacks from Japan.
After discharge from the Navy, WC worked as a carpenter building manufactured homes for Magnolia Homes before moving on to F. P. Baylor Construction, where he worked for many years building and refurbishing. He spent several years working for the Bechtel Nuclear Power Plant before going into business with his son Rickey, creating Jones & Son Carpentry. WC took great pride in any work that he performed and especially loved building wood crafts and various types of mechanics. He loved the challenge of getting broken down vehicles running again as well as repairing lawn mowers, weed eaters and small appliances. His work ethic and pride were evident in all that he did, and he did it heartily for the Lord. When not working, WC enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and his friends.
WC was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi for 45 years. He loved his church and faithfully served as a Deacon for many years. He enjoyed singing in the church choir, participating in pageants and doing work as needed around the church. In 2006, WC moved to Rosharon, Texas to live with his daughter, Derinda, and his son-in-law, Tom and moved his church membership to First Baptist Church of Rosharon where he served for 11 years. In 2017, he moved to Sandy Point Bible Church in Rosharon, Texas, where he attended until his passing. He loved reading The Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, and in the last 4 years of his life he had read it through 21 times. He built his life on God’s Word and lead by excellent example, modeling the love of Jesus in everything he did.
WC never met a stranger and was always quick to offer a gentle smile, hug or a word of encouragement and always expressed gratitude for even the smallest of favors. He touched the lives of everyone he met and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by son William Calton Jones (Kathy) of Brookhaven, MS; son Patrick Wayne Jones (Paula) of Vicksburg, MS; daughter Joyce Derinda Wagner (Tom) of Rosharon, TX; sons Jimmy Jay Jones and Johnny Ray Jones of Wyoming; grandchildren Carl, Melissa, Derrick, Melinda, Brandy, Brandt, Amanda, Katrina, Heather, Layce, Chad, Brenda and Michael as well as many extended family members and friends.
William was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Sarah F. (Deason) Jones; son Eugene; parents Jessie and Alta; brothers Felix, Charles, Jesse and sister, Louise.
