Our Story
C.P. “Matt” Matheson dreamt of owning and operating a funeral home in a small town like Angleton, Texas. In 1972, he founded Palms Funeral Home and has served families in Angleton and the surrounding area for more than 40 years. Mr. Matheson built Palms Funeral Home on the premise that, with regard to service, nothing but “exceptional” was acceptable. Matt was a partner and funeral director with Niday Funeral Home in Houston and Southpark Funeral Home and Cemetery in Pearland. In 1987, Matt sold Palms Funeral Home to Paragon Family Services, a small funeral home acquisition company. Two years later, Paragon was merged with The Loewen Group.
Since its inception, Palms Funeral Home has always maintained the climate of being a family-owned and -operated firm - even in the midst of corporate ownership. Matt’s daughter, Nancy Matheson Davis, and son, Tommy Matheson, began working at the funeral home as teenagers. Although Matt retired in 1988, Tommy and Nancy continued to operate the funeral home during the period of corporate ownership. In 1997, Nancy’s husband, Richard Davis, joined the staff at Palms Funeral Home after retiring from the Dow Chemical Company. The expertise of these individuals and their influence in the operations of Palms Funeral Home helped to continue the family-like atmosphere that is so valued by the community they serve.
In 1999, the Matheson and Davis families were given the opportunity to purchase Palms Funeral Home from the Loewen Group. On October 24, 2000, Nancy and Richard Davis, along with Tommy Matheson and his wife, Stacey, finalized the purchase of Palms Funeral Home. This milestone moved the firm into its second generation of family ownership.
Today, Palms Funeral Home still maintains its strong heritage and its legacy of excellent service. They are continually exploring new and creative ways to make funeral service more meaningful and personalized. The family at Palms Funeral Home is dedicated to being leaders in the community, strengthening their tradition, and making efforts to expand the services they offer.
